Our Work
Sustainable Innovation Centre is focused on providing long-lasting solutions to the community through grassroots sustainable development initiatives, i.e. climate-smart agriculture, innovation, education, and women's economic empowerment.
We firmly believe that grassroots development helps break barriers that limit individuals from reaching their full potential, especially the marginalized community. Growth for strengthening resilience among communities means strengthening their capacities to overcome change, and there is need for grassroots sustainable development if we are to make a difference.
Climate Smart Agriculture
At the Sustainable Innovation Center, we empower communities through practical, ecologically sound, and scalable solutions. Across the region, we are redefining local food security and economic resilience by embedding permaculture directly into the educational system—transforming schools into vibrant hubs of innovation, learning, and abundance.
Why Permaculture? Reclaiming the Land, Unlocking Potential
Traditional field agriculture often requires expensive inputs, large land footprints, and heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers—making it both economically taxing and ecologically unsustainable. We chose permaculture to break this cycle.
By working with nature rather than against it, our permaculture initiatives design self-sustaining ecosystems that restore soil fertility, conserve water, and deliver exceptionally high yields on compact footprints.
Permaculture in School
Students practice active integration with the ecosystem through intentional planting and watering. They gather mature crops to nourish the school while financing secondary activities, then transfer agronomic knowledge home to set up family setups.
- Daily soil stewardship & ecosystem harvesting
- School nutrition & funding from produce sales
- Community multiplication — fruit variant propagation
Greenhouses & Shade Nets
To beat unpredictable weather patterns, we transition farming from open‑air vulnerability to protected microclimates. Our hubs act as learning centers for local smallholder farmers to experience sustainable technology firsthand.
- Customized greenhouse units for year‑round production
- Low‑pressure drip irrigation — cutting water waste
- Soil ecosystems with organic mulching & bio‑fertilizers
- Optimized for high‑value crops: tomatoes, sweet peppers
Scholarship & Education Access
Removing financial barriers through full and partial scholarships — because talent is universal, but opportunity is not. We invest in students who will transform their communities.
How It Works
- Identification & Selection — Partnering with schools and communities to identify high‑potential students facing financial barriers.
- Mentorship & Support — Ongoing guidance to ensure academic success and personal development.
Daily Nutrition & School Feeding
Providing daily nutritious porridge to children — addressing classroom hunger directly while improving attendance, concentration, and local development loops.
Our Approach
- Local Supply Chain Integration — Purchasing processing ingredients directly from surrounding smallholders, reinvesting in local economies.
- Daily Institutional Delivery — A hot, micro‑nutrient dense meal is prepared every morning, removing baseline classroom hunger.
Menstrual Hygiene and Health
Keeping girls in class and free from stigma — we provide sanitary pads to over 500 girls per term, paired with hygiene education so no girl misses school because of her period.
Our Approach
- Termly Sanitary Pad Distribution — Reaching over 500 girls every term across our partner schools.
- Menstrual Health Education — Age-appropriate sessions that break stigma and build confidence.
- Attendance Protection — Removing period poverty as a barrier to staying in school.
Music and Arts
Empowering schools with instruments and equipment for music and arts co-curricular activities — helping students discover and develop their talents, with pathways toward future careers.
Our Approach
- Equipment Provision — Supplying schools with instruments and materials for music and arts clubs.
- Co-Curricular Development — Supporting structured activities that build students' skills beyond the classroom.
- Career Pathways — Nurturing talent that can grow into future creative and performing arts careers.
Women Empowerment
Creating sustainable livelihoods for women through agricultural processing and value addition — transforming local resources like sisal and peanuts into income-generating opportunities.
Sisal Processing Innovation
- Solar‑ & diesel‑powered machines — Dramatically increasing fibre yield while ensuring processing continuity.
- Community processing centres — Shared accessible facilities serving multiple women's groups.
- Skills training — Full value‑chain training from extraction to rope making, mat weaving, and marketing.
- Market linkages — Strategic partnerships to connect products to fair‑price buyers.
Peanut Processing & Value Addition
- Quality sorting & toxin management — Rigorous sorting to prevent aflatoxin.
- Precision roasting & shelling — Small‑scale roasting equipment for industrial‑grade products.
- Milling & formulations — Producing smooth or crunchy pastes without artificial stabilizers.
- Compliant packaging & safety seals — Shelf‑life, nutritional labeling, and tamper‑evident retail packaging.
(Village Banking & Financial Literacy)
Village Banking & Financial Literacy
Building women's financial independence through village banking groups, where members save together and borrow interest-free — paired with financial literacy training to grow and protect their savings.
Our Approach
- Village Banking Groups — Women pool regular savings within community-run groups.
- Interest-Free Borrowing — Members can borrow from the group's savings without paying interest.
- Financial Literacy Training — Practical skills in budgeting, saving, and managing small enterprises.
(Water Access & Infrastructure)
Water Access & Infrastructure
Bringing clean, reliable water to the community through water tank installations and a solar-powered borehole upgrade — reducing dependence on diesel and expanding access for the whole community.
Our Approach
- Water Tank Provision — Installing storage tanks that give households and institutions reliable access to clean water.
- Solar-Powered Borehole Upgrade — Converting the community borehole from diesel to solar power, cutting running costs and downtime.
- Community-Wide Reach — Serving the whole community with a dependable, lower-cost water source.
